New to Version 3, BASE enables you to manipulate database data seamlessly within OpenOffice.org. Create and modify tables, forms, queries, and reports, either using your own database or Base’s own built-in HSQL database engine.
Base The new way to access databases
New to Version 3, BASE enables you to manipulate database data seamlessly within OpenOffice.org. Create and modify tables, forms, queries, and reports, either using your own database or BASE’s own built-in HSQL database engine. Technical footnotes
BASE includes a full version of the HSQL database engine, storing data in XML files. It can also access dBASE files natively for simple database work.
For more advanced requirements, BASE supports many popular databases database natively (Adabas D, ADO, Microsoft Access, MySQL), or any database through industry-standard ODBC and JDBC drivers. It also supports any LDAP compliant address book, as well as common formats such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Windows, and Mozilla
Math Create equations and formulae for your documents
MATH is OpenOffice.org's component for mathematical
equations. It is most commonly used as an equation editor
for text documents, but it can also be used with other types
of documents or stand-alone. When used inside WRITER, the
equation is treated as an object inside the text document.
Similarly, one can also insert these into other
OpenOffice.org programs like CALC and IMPRESS.
Using MATH, there are three main ways of entering a formula:
- Type markup in the equation editor.
- Right-click on the equation editor and select the symbol from the context menu.
- Select a symbol from the Selection toolbox.
The Suite Advantage OpenOffice.org is more than a collection of five superb tools.
Unlike some competitors, this suite was not created from a collection of separate pieces of software. From the start, it was designed as one complete office package.
- All the packages have a similar 'look and feel' making them very easy to use, with common 'learn once use everywhere' tools like the Styles and Formatting. OpenOffice.org takes its 'look and feel' from your computer - if you change your desktop, OpenOffice.org will change to match.
- The same tools are used consistently across the suite - for example, the tools you use to work with graphics within Writer are also found in Impress and Draw.
- You don't need to know which application was used to create a particular file - you can 'File Open' any OpenOffice.org file from anywhere and the correct application will be launched.
- All the packages share a common spell-checker, etc.; and if you change an 'Option' in one package, it's changed in them all.
- Information can be transferred easily between all the packages.
- All the components save in OpenDocument format, the new international standard for office documents. This XML based format offers substantial disk savings compared to common competitors' formats. It also means you can access your data from any OpenDocument compliant software.
- All the packages are installed in one single operation, using the installation process you are used to on your computer.
- All the packages are released under the same open licensing model - there are no hidden charges now or in the future.
Everything you need in an office productivity suite.
Enhanced PDF Export
OpenOffice.org
1.1 introduced the PDF export feature. Version 3 now
extends the basic export feature. With the new version
it is possible to define the compression levels of
embedded images. In addition, the PDF support now
correctly handles thumbnail images and hyperlinks.
Australia's history archived in OpenOffice.org
Steven Deare, LinuxWorld 14/10/2003 14:20:32
Australia's history will be viewed digitally in the OpenOffice.org office suite as part of plans to preserve the quality and accessibility of government documents.
The National Archives of Australia (NAA) is using the open source software to help store and display archived documents from government agencies.
The decision to use OpenOffice.org came last November, at the beginning of a project to develop methods for preserving digital records, said Perth-based assistant director of digital preservation Simon Davis.

"Free software" is a
matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should
think of "free" as in "free speech," not as in "free beer."
Free software is a matter of the
users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve
the software.
OpenOffice.org is
free in both senses mentioned above. Since the software on the CD is
distributed under an open source license, it really is free (as in
speech). Once you receive your CD, you are free to install it on as
many computers as you like. (don't
try this with Microsoft software, folks)
OpenOffice.org is also free (as in beer) - meaning free to download. If you're computer savvy, and have a high-bandwidth Internet connection, you can download the entire OpenOffice.org suite as a 450 MB .zip file. Even if you decide not to buy it on a CD from us, I highly recommend you try this great software. The OpenOffice DVD includes lots of Extras including Templates, Clip Art, etc and is 1.75GB in size.
However, if you are like me, and prefer the convenience of a CD-Rom or DVD, this CD or DVD is a great value. When you insert the CD in your CD-Rom drive, it automatically brings up the menu, which makes installation as simple as possible. (This menu is not included with the downloaded version). The DVD also includes extra document templates and additional programs, which are not included in the basic OpenOffice.org download. However you get your copy, you owe it to yourself to try this great software. I recently switched from using Microsoft Office, and now use OpenOfice.org myself every day. I have found OpenOfice.org to be faster and more efficient than Microsoft Office, and just as user friendly. In fact., so I can tell you from personal experience that this OpenOffice.org has every important feature most people want, without the bloat of recent versions of Microsoft Office. I really cannot recommend this great office package highly enough. Please try it. I know that you will love it like I do.
System Requirements:
Microsoft Windows
(98, Me, 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher), XP or Vista)
Pentium 100 processor, or faster
(Intel, AMD, or compatible) 128 MB RAM, or
more 250 MB
hard drive space, or more (for full install - partial uses
less)
or Mac OS-X (X11 User) Linux or
Solaris versions also available on request
This software is on a CD containing the full version of OpenOffice.org Version 3 for Windows, Linux, & Mac OS X (not a time-out or feature limited demo version) The CD also contains documentation (in .pdf format). This office suite will run on all modern versions of Windows, including 98, Me, NT 4, 2000, XP & Vista. It requires only a Pentium compatible processor, 32 MB of RAM (64 MB recommended) and 170 MB free hard drive space for a full install (you can get by with less space, if you choose to install only certain components - like just the word processor, for example).
